A canned espresso drink has two jobs that do not always agree with each other: be convenient enough to grab cold from the fridge and still taste enough like coffee that the can does not become a sweet dairy drink with caffeine hiding in it. HFF tried Black Rifle Coffee Company's Espresso with Cream with that balance in mind.
Black Rifle positions the can as coffee-forward first
Black Rifle's current ready-to-drink line includes Espresso with Cream alongside Espresso Mocha and Espresso Salted Caramel, and the company describes the range as coffee-forward with premium ingredients and controlled sweetness. That framing matters because cream can smooth espresso very quickly. The drink needs enough roast and bitterness underneath the dairy to make the word espresso feel like more than branding on the front of the can.
Two hundred milligrams of caffeine changes the role of the drink
The company lists 200 milligrams of caffeine per can. That puts the beverage firmly in functional coffee territory rather than treating it like a lightly caffeinated dessert. It also makes the flavor balance more important. A can that strong may be used as a morning or afternoon coffee replacement, so repeatability matters more than novelty. The drink has to be something a coffee drinker could finish comfortably, not merely something that tastes impressive for two cold sips.
Cream should soften espresso without making it disappear
The appeal of cream in strong coffee is contrast. Dairy rounds bitter edges, adds body and can make roasted flavors seem more chocolatey or nutty without needing a flavored syrup.
