Blue Bell used sherbet to carry the root beer side
The official flavor combines creamy vanilla ice cream with an A&W Root Beer-flavored sherbet. That is a clever structural choice because a float is not just vanilla ice cream that happens to taste like root beer. It is a contrast between dairy richness and fizzy, herbal-sweet soda. Sherbet gives Blue Bell a lighter, icier layer to separate from the vanilla, letting the carton suggest two components instead of turning everything into one uniformly flavored brown scoop.
The swirl matters because a real float is inconsistent by design
One spoonful of a root beer float might be mostly ice cream, the next more soda, and the best part often happens where the two start melting together. A swirl can mimic a little of that variation. The company said customers had specifically requested an A&W version, and it sold the flavor in half-gallon and pint sizes through 2025. For a Brenham-based ice cream company with deep Texas recognition, pairing another familiar soft drink with vanilla is an easy concept to understand, but recognition alone does not guarantee the root beer note will stay strong once it meets rich dairy.

Many collaboration foods are judged against an abstract idea. A&W Root Beer Float Ice Cream has an obvious benchmark: it should remind you of the drink that inspired it.
