Medium Rare Closes Its Midtown Houston Restaurant
Medium Rare has closed its Midtown Houston restaurant on Louisiana Street, ending a run of just under two years for the steak-frites concept.

Houston has lost one of its steak-frites specialists. Medium Rare closed its Midtown restaurant at 3201 Louisiana on September 6, ending a Houston run that lasted just under two years.
The concept originated in Washington, D.C. in 2011 and built its identity around a tightly focused steak-frites experience rather than the sprawling menu of a traditional steakhouse. It later expanded to several cities, including New York, Philadelphia, Boston, New Orleans, Dallas and Houston.
The Houston location is now closed
A representative for Medium Rare told Houston Press that the company was grateful for the support it received from Houston diners and proud of the relationships created during its time in the city. The statement also left open the possibility that the brand could return to Houston at some point.
No future Houston location has been announced, however, so for now the Midtown closure marks the end of the concept’s local presence.
Part of a difficult period for restaurants
The Houston closure comes during a period of significant turnover across the restaurant industry, with operators balancing higher costs, changing dining habits and intense competition for discretionary spending. Medium Rare has also seen changes elsewhere, including closures in New Orleans and Dallas.
That does not necessarily tell the whole story of any individual restaurant, and the company did not publicly give a detailed reason for leaving Houston. Still, another closure in a prominent inner-loop dining area is a reminder of how quickly the local restaurant map can change.
What happens next
For Houston diners who liked the straightforward steak-and-fries format, there is no replacement location to point to yet. The company’s statement suggests Houston is not permanently off the table, but any return would require a new announcement.
We will update HFF coverage if Medium Rare confirms another Houston-area location or if a new restaurant is announced for the Louisiana Street space.
