H&H Bagels Opens Its First Texas Location in Houston

A familiar New York bagel name has officially arrived in Houston. H&H Bagels opened September 10 at 2850 Westheimer, marking the company’s first location in both Houston and Texas.

The Houston franchise is owned by Norman Khan, a Houston resident who was born and raised in New York. H&H itself dates to 1972 and has grown beyond New York City through a mix of company locations and franchises.

What makes H&H different

The company is known for a traditional water-bagel process. Its bagels are proofed, kettle boiled and then oven baked throughout the day. H&H emphasizes ingredients such as unbleached, unbromated flour and says its bagels are made without artificial preservatives.

The Houston menu includes familiar bagel choices such as plain, everything, sesame, cinnamon raisin and jalapeño cheddar. Diners can keep things simple with flavored cream-cheese spreads or turn the bagels into full breakfast and lunch sandwiches.

Breakfast sandwiches and New York staples

Made-to-order options include a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich as well as a nova salmon sandwich with traditional accompaniments. Cream cheese flavors include scallion, spicy scallion, vegetable and strawberry.

For Houston, the opening lands in an area already packed with breakfast, coffee and casual dining choices. H&H is betting that its New York history and specific bagel-making method will give it enough identity to stand apart.

A first for Texas

The Westheimer shop is significant not only because it is a Houston debut but because it is H&H’s first Texas location. That makes the opening a useful test of how a brand strongly associated with New York translates to a city with its own increasingly competitive bagel scene.

If the Houston location develops the kind of following the company has elsewhere, it could also become a signal for additional Texas expansion. For now, Houston diners finally have a local place to decide for themselves how the famous bagels compare.
